BGCA Volunteering Sessions

I first heard about BGCA from the school’s Secondary Student Bulletin. I took an interest to the variety of volunteer sessions and opportunities they presented, and attended the briefing session.

Overtime, I have met many people from the BGCA centre, and volunteered three times. I have participated and helped with the English Tutoring sessions for younger children on the 24th of July, and the 7th and 14th of August, 2023.

I volunteered to help for the exposure, but also because it felt really wonderful helping and communicating with the children. Before this experience, I didn’t know why these children couldn’t go to a normal school, why their parents would send their child to BGCA instead of letting them go to a bigger school for education.

Now I know the reason. It’s because most parents just can’t afford it. BGCA is an organisation that helps the youth and elderly, so when I volunteered, I realised how much this helped them. The extent of this kindness.

There was a young child who joined the session late. He was extremely shy, with no friends or connections to rely on in class. He couldn’t even come to the first session, and was in tears during the second, his guardian and teacher surrounding him. In the third and final session, I came to try and comfort him. The small gesture brought him out of his shell, into the class, where other young students greeted him. After that, he was able to attend lessons.

I was so happy I could help, but most importantly, I now know how much this matters. To some people, it may not be worth a penny, but to others, it could be life-changing.
